Feature on desire and high jewellery

An Extract…

London based gallery Symbolic & Chase is renowned for dealing with past glories from Belperron and Boivin, as well as contemporary pieces from JAR and Theodoros the uber-discreet Greek jeweller who uses vintage and playfully cut gemstones, such as sapphires in the shape of rhombus.  Symbolic & Chase only display a handful of Theodoros’s creations, so without a personal introduction it is almost impossible to see much of his work.

Fewer than 400 people are permitted to follow his Instagram account (A brand such as Bulgari, by contrast has 10 million.) Shunning social media is about more than preventing jewels bing copied, according to Melanie Grant, author of Coveted: Art and Innovation in High Jewellery: “These jewellers are delaying and in some cases denying that pleasure purposefully, creative desire in the process, and there are few things more seductive to the man or woman who can have everything.”
